The call came from a parking lot off Palomar Street in the Montgomery neighborhood of Chula Vista. The owner had been at an appointment and came back to a fob that would not unlock the doors. She was standing outside her XC70 in the afternoon heat, using the mechanical emergency blade tucked inside the fob just to get in. The fob itself was not recovering.
That meant a replacement fob and a full programming sequence. I had the hardware in the van, connected my equipment to the OBD port, and ran the Volvo add-a-key procedure. The XC70 immobilizer requires proper tool communication to accept a new fob, and the process has a timed sequence built in, so you do not rush it. About 40 minutes from first connection to final test walk.
Every button worked. She drove home that Tuesday. The dealer route would have meant nearly a week without the car, plus a tow to a dealership she had never been to. Her total with me was a fraction of what they quoted her.
