I was already running calls near Bressi Ranch on a Saturday evening when the phone rang. A couple had walked out from a spot near the shops off Palomar Airport Road and their 2008 XC70 was sitting dark. No response from the fob, no door unlock, nothing. When I got there the fob was the original factory unit, still in the shell it came in from the factory, battery probably sitting in it since before this couple bought the car. The CR2450 was reading almost nothing on my meter. Swapped it, reseated the contacts, and then ran a resync through the diagnostic port because a fob that's gone fully dark on this system sometimes loses its handshake with the central electronic module even after the battery comes back.

First press after the resync, the doors unlocked. I walked the whole fob, every button, checked that the car saw the key as authorized, verified start function. Everything came back clean.

They drove home that night. The dealer conversation never really came up, but I know what that route looks like for a Saturday evening Volvo call. It doesn't end with driving home the same night.
