2016 Volvo Xc70 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
She had just finished at the allergist with her daughter and was walking back through the Shadowridge parking lot when nothing happened. No chirp, no lights, nothing. The 2016 Volvo XC70 just sat there.
It was around 5:30 in the evening, the medical building was wrapping up for the night, and the Volvo dealer was already closed. She called me.
I got out to her location, got the door open using the mechanical insert key in the fob, and started with the basics. The CR2450 was the factory-original cell and it had a visible greenish crust on one of the contacts inside the housing. That kind of corrosion doesn't always kill the fob immediately, it just keeps degrading the connection until one day you're standing in a parking lot in Vista with nothing.
I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port to check what the vehicle security system was seeing. It wasn't seeing the fob at all, not even a rejected attempt, just silence. Confirmed the fob had stopped transmitting. I set her up with a replacement smart key, paired it through the diagnostic port, and ran through every function before I packed up.
From her phone call to the engine running was under fifty minutes. She got home before dinner instead of leaving her XC70 overnight in a closed medical lot. That part she mentioned twice.
