A guy from the Westwood side of Rancho Bernardo found me after another locksmith had already taken his money and left him with a key that would not start his 2007 XC90.

The story he told me was familiar. The first locksmith tried to program through the OBD port, the engine cranked clean, and then it died every single time right after firing. The locksmith poked around, told him the Central Electronic Module was probably faulty, and walked away. The owner had already paid for that visit. Now he was paying again.

I asked him to describe the crank and stall precisely. Immediate stall, no stumble, no hesitation -- just a clean two-second run and then nothing. That pattern points one direction. The immobilizer received the start signal, checked its key registry, found nothing it recognized, and shut the engine down. The CEM was not bad. The key data was simply never written into it correctly because the previous attempt never read the EEPROM first.

I pulled the CEM from under the dash, took it to my bench setup in the van, and read the secured memory directly. From that dump I generated the correct key data. Wrote it back, reinstalled the module, and finished the registration through the diagnostic port. His original remote flip key -- five buttons, the factory fob for this car -- went through three consecutive clean starts. I walked him through what the tool screen showed so he could see the key sitting registered in the module.

He was frustrated, reasonably so. He had already spent money on a job that was not completed. I did not bring up the dealer price. He did. Said the dealer had quoted him a number that made him look for other options in the first place. All I told him was that the job was done now, and the key was in the system.

He drove home from Westwood that afternoon.
