Push-to-start all-keys-lost on a Volvo is the job that worries owners the most. No ignition slot on newer SPA and CMA models. The car needs to wirelessly detect a registered fob before it will start. When that fob is gone, the car feels completely dead, but it isn't. The CEM stores encrypted key data that has to be read on the bench before new keys can be generated.
A customer at a mountain lodge outside Rancho Bernardo had a 2007 Volvo Xc90 with push-to-start and zero keys. He was 45 minutes from town with his family and no way to move the car.
I drove to the lodge with my ACDP bench setup. I backed up everything before touching the data, generated a new key from the secured dump, wrote the CEM back, and finished programming through OBD. His fob, FCC ID LQNP2T-APU, was a 5-button smart key. The CEM accepted the new fob on the first attempt after the bench procedure.
His Volvo started at a mountain lodge with no dealer anywhere close. Total was around $251. The dealer would have been $476 plus a long tow. Volvo AKL is bench-dependent on most smart key models. Right equipment, careful CEM handling, and full EEPROM backup before every write. That's what separates a field job from a dealer-only situation.
