On the 2008 XC90, all-keys-lost means going through the diagnostic port to clear the existing key memory and enroll new fobs from scratch. It takes longer than a simple add-a-key job because of the timed procedure involved, but it is absolutely doable on site. If you need two keys, get them both done in the same session. The programming procedure only has to run once regardless of how many keys you're adding, so the second key costs less than the first.

The flip key on the 2008 XC90 is a bit different from the fully hidden-blade smart keys on later Volvos. The blade is integrated into the flip mechanism itself - it folds away when not in use and deploys when you press the release button. So there's no separate hidden blade to extract; the flip blade is the mechanical key.

What some owners don't know is that the driver's door handle has a physical lock cylinder behind a small cover. If the electronics are completely dead, that's your manual entry point. For starting the car when the fob battery is critically low, holding the fob close to the ignition area can sometimes give the passive transponder enough proximity to be read. A fresh CR2032 is always the first move before anything else.

I replaced the CR2032 in my XC90 fob and now none of the remote buttons work. Did I break something?

This one comes up a lot on these. The transponder for starting the car is separate from the RF remote function. So when owners swap the battery and the doors stop responding, they assume the worst.

Most of the time what actually happened is the remote lost its RF sync with the body control module during the battery swap - a brief loss of power is enough on some of these. The fix is usually a simple resync, not a full reprogram. Try standing within a few feet of the car, pressing lock and unlock in sequence. If the car responds, you're back. If it doesn't, the remote side may need to be re-paired, which is a short procedure with diagnostic equipment. The engine start function should still work either way since the transponder doesn't depend on the remote battery in the same way.

My XC90 starts fine but the key-not-detected warning comes on while I'm driving. What does that mean?

This is a known quirk on these P2-era XC90s. The vehicle successfully read the key at startup, but somewhere during the drive the system loses confidence in the signal. Usually points to one of three things: a weak battery in the fob causing intermittent transponder reads, a degraded contact inside the fob housing, or an issue with the antenna ring around the ignition barrel.

The car won't shut off mid-drive over this - it already authorized the start. But it's worth addressing before it becomes a no-start. Swap the CR2032 first. If the warning keeps appearing with a fresh battery, have the ignition antenna inspected. That ring can wear or develop a loose connection on higher-mileage examples of this generation.
