2015 Volvo Xc90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2015 Volvo Xc90 Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Garden Road Area in Poway, I pulled up to a guy who had a straightforward question before he even said hello: was the spare he had sitting in a drawer at home actually going to hold up as a daily driver key, or was it just a backup in name only.

He had a 2015 Volvo XC90. The spare was original, still worked, but his daily key had a cracked shell and a blade that was starting to feel loose at the pivot. He wanted a replacement he could carry every day and not baby.

I told him what I tell everyone who asks that question. The part you pay for when you go OEM is the brand name on the housing. The transponder inside, the blade profile, the button layout, the circuit design - aftermarket blanks built from quality stock match all of it functionally. The difference in daily use is zero if the sourcing is right. Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap suppliers cutting corners on the shell material, button pads, or the chip tolerances. I test every batch before I stock anything. If a batch doesn't hold up in testing, it goes back.

I swapped his shell, verified the blade was cut correctly, programmed the replacement against his vehicle right there in his parents' driveway, and walked every button and the ignition cycle to confirm everything was talking. Took about forty minutes total.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted him. That part almost came up as an afterthought. The real point was he drove away with a key that was going to hold up.
