2018 Volvo Xc90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a driver who had pulled into a parking lot off Sweetwater Road in National City and found himself holding a fob with the emergency blade half-deployed and stiff.
He had been trying to get into the door manually because the proximity wasn't triggering reliably, and the blade had never been extended in the life of the car. Years of coastal air will do that to a cylinder.
He told me another locksmith had already given him a phone quote for a full door cylinder replacement. That is a real job on some vehicles. On a 2018 XC90, I wanted to look at it first before tearing anything apart.
When I got there I could see the blade had not broken, just bound up tight in the cylinder. I worked the cylinder carefully, decoded it from the wafer positions, and got the blade free without damaging anything inside. Then I lubricated the cylinder properly so the next use would not be a fight. I cut a replacement emergency blade to match the decoded reading so he had a working backup going forward.
The fob itself was the separate issue. Proximity detection had been soft for a while, and once I ran diagnostics I could see the key needed to be re-paired to the vehicle security system. I handled that on site through the OBD port with my equipment.
He asked about the cylinder replacement quote he had gotten. Told him the cylinder was fine. He saved a good chunk and left with everything working the way it should.
