Downtown Oceanside, outside one of the cobbler shops near the pier end of the main strip. Owner of a 2017 XC90 called me because a key a different locksmith had programmed five days earlier had started acting up. Not dead, just inconsistent. It would start the car in the morning, then by early evening the car would intermittently reject the fob. Some cycles it worked. Some it threw a warning. He was convinced the body control module was going.
It wasn't.
When I pulled the fob apart on the hood of my van, the battery was already soft, a CR2032 that read low on the meter. That alone can cause detection issues on these because the passive authorization circuit needs a certain minimum voltage to handshake cleanly at range. But swapping the battery and retesting showed the problem was still there, just slightly quieter.
I ran diagnostics through the OBD port and read the key data. The transponder chip in that fob was not the correct type for this generation of the XC90's immobilizer. What had happened was subtle and genuinely sneaky: the wrong chip passed the first layer of the handshake well enough to authorize a start. But Volvo's immobilizer runs a deeper verification, and the second check was catching the mismatch intermittently, not every time. So the car started fine for a few days, then started failing when the system was warm or when a slightly different timing sequence ran.
I programmed a fresh fob with the correct transponder type matched to his car's immobilizer, replaced the battery at the same time, and walked every function: door lock, door unlock, liftgate, and passive start authorization. Sat there for ten minutes running cycles before I called it done.
He asked what the other locksmith had done wrong. Honest answer: probably pulled the wrong chip spec for the generation. The 2017 XC90 is specific about what it will accept for long-term authorization. Close is not close enough.
His cost was a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and the dealer would have started by assuming the body control module needed attention, which would have been wrong and expensive.
