Worst case on a 2013 Volvo Xc90 is an all-keys-lost where another locksmith attempted the job, couldn't read the CEM, and left the system in a fault state. His smart key, FCC ID LQNP2T-APU, was a 5-button fob. The CEM came back online and accepted the new key on the first clean attempt. I showed the shop team what went wrong so they'd know what to look for if it ever came up again.
Total was about two hours including the module removal and reinstall. His bill was $234. The alternative was a flatbed to the Volvo dealer, a possible CEM replacement at $451 or more, and a week without his car.
