I lost all my keys to my 2013 Volvo XC90. Can you still make a replacement?

Yes, and it's one of the more involved jobs we handle. All-keys-lost on the first-generation XC90 isn't a plug-in-and-go situation. The key data lives inside the central electronic module, and accessing it requires either pulling that module for bench work to read the stored data directly, or using diagnostic software capable of communicating with the Volvo security architecture at a deep enough level to generate and register new key information. Either way, the blade still needs to be cut, the fob needs to be programmed, and the immobilizer needs to accept the new key before the engine will run. Many locksmiths turn down Volvo AKL entirely because they don't have the tools or the training. We've done it. Plan for one to three hours on site depending on what the module gives us.

Do I really need to tow my XC90 to the dealer if I'm stuck with no working key?

No. Towing is the dealer's answer because it's the only answer they have for getting the car to their shop. It's not the only answer that exists. We come to the vehicle. How long does an all-keys-lost job take on the 2013 XC90?

Realistically, budget one to three hours. The variable is what the central electronic module gives us when we get into it. On a cooperative module with clean data, the process moves steadily: access the module, extract key information, generate the new key data, cut the blade, program the fob, verify with the immobilizer. When something in the module has been touched before, or there's a stored fault complicating the security handshake, it takes longer to sort out before programming can begin. Dealers quote similar time frames when everything is in stock, but the key itself can take days to two weeks to arrive if they have to order it. We bring the parts to your car.

My 2013 XC90 remote works sometimes and fails other times. Is the fob going bad or is it something else?

Intermittent remote function on this fob has a few common causes. Start with the CR2032. Even a battery that reads okay on a basic meter can drop under load and cause inconsistent signal. Swap it first. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, look at the fob itself: the flip blade hinge takes wear over time, and if the blade isn't fully seated in the closed position, the internal contacts can shift slightly and affect the circuit board. Open the fob and check that everything is seated clean. If the range is short and the signal is weak but consistent, that's usually antenna-side on the vehicle. If functions drop in and out with no pattern, the fob may need to be reprogrammed or replaced. All of that is diagnosable on site.

Can I buy a replacement flip key fob online and program it myself?

The blade you could potentially have cut elsewhere, but the fob programming is a different matter. The 2013 XC90 does not have a DIY relearn sequence for the remote functions. Registering a new fob to the vehicle's central electronic module requires diagnostic equipment. If you buy a fob online, you still need a technician with the right tools to pair it. The factory identifier on the fob needs to match what the system expects, and the programming has to be written through the module, not through an ignition sequence.
