Worst case on a 1997 Ford F-150 is an all-keys-lost smart key where the car battery dies during programming and the body control module throws errors. It happens more than you'd think. Total job time was about an hour and a half, which is longer than normal. His bill was 95. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and 200 or more. I carry backup tools and backup power specifically for when the first approach hits a wall.
