2012 Ford F-150
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how is it different from a regular key?

A remote head key is one piece: the fob buttons and the transponder chip are built directly into the key head, and the blade folds out or is fixed, depending on the design. Your 2012 F-150 uses a fixed-blade version where everything is integrated into one housing. There are three buttons on yours for lock, unlock, and the third function.

Q: My F-150 is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do?

Start with the battery. The remote head key on the 2012 F-150 takes a CR2032, and a weak cell will cause the remote to cut out before the transponder side has any issues -- so you might see intermittent warnings even though the key still starts the truck. Swap the battery first. If a fresh CR2032 does not clear it, do not keep cycling the ignition trying to force a start.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself at home?

On the 2012 F-150, there is an onboard programming sequence for the remote side that some owners have had success with -- it involves using a working key and cycling the ignition in a specific pattern to enter programming mode. It does not require a computer. However, it only works for the remote functions, and you need at least one currently working programmed key to trigger the sequence.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made for a 2012 F-150 if I have no working keys?

All-keys-lost on this truck runs about 45 to 60 minutes on site. I come to you in Hollywood Beach or anywhere else in Oxnard. The job covers cutting the blade to your lock, programming the transponder so the vehicle security system recognizes it, and getting the remote functions enrolled. I verify every button and do a cold-start test before I call it done. No tow to a dealer, no waiting days for a parts order.

2012 Ford F-150 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over at the auto parts store in Oxnard, near Hollywood Beach, a guy was sitting on the hood of his 2012 F-150 looking like he was trying to decide if the day was going to get worse. It already had.

He had searched for a locksmith on his phone, clicked the top ad, and got a guy who quoted one price on the phone and tripled it once he was standing next to the truck. The key that came out of that job would start the engine, but all three remote buttons were completely dead. Lock, unlock, nothing. He paid more than he should have for a half-finished job and then had to start over.

He found me through Google Guaranteed and the first thing he said was, "How do I know you're legit?" That is a fair question and I respect it. I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone before he even agreed to a visit. He pulled it up on the state website while we were still talking. Verified, active, real name attached.

When I got there, I went through the full job with my programmer: confirmed the factory fob ID on his existing fob, diagnosed what the previous tech had left incomplete, then re-enrolled the key so both the transponder and the remote registered correctly. Ran through all three buttons. Tested the engine start. Everything came back clean.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out. He didn't bother. He already knew it would have been more, and he was just glad the job was actually done.

Ford F-150 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. On the 2012 F-150, the ignition cylinder sits on the column and a broken key fragment is a standard extraction job if you know what you are doing. The part that catches people off guard: once the blade snaps and the key head is no longer seated properly in the cylinder, the transponder chip may not be in the right position for the immobilizer to read it.
