1999 Ford F-150 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy near Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. His 1999 F-150 had one working key left and the plastic bow was cracked almost in half. He'd been babying it for weeks, holding it together with electrical tape. He said the truck was his daily and he couldn't risk it splitting apart inside the ignition cylinder.
He was parked on the street. I pulled up, grabbed the original, and checked the transponder with my reader. Good TI 4C chip still firing. The PATS module on these is mounted behind the ignition lock cylinder, and it reads the chip through the ring antenna, part number F5TZ-15607-AB on most of these tenth-gen F-150s. If that antenna has corrosion or a loose connector at the C249 plug, even a good key won't read.
His antenna was fine. I cut a fresh H72-PT blank, matched the bitting to his original, and programmed the new transponder through the two-key PATS procedure. On PATS I, you need at least two previously programmed keys to add a third without diagnostic equipment. He only had one working key, so I used my Smart Pro to bypass that requirement and write the new key directly through the OBD-II port.
Cut, programmed, tested. Truck started clean, theft light went solid then off. He peeled the tape off his old key and tossed it in the glovebox as a backup.
Whole thing took about twenty minutes. The dealer had quoted him days of wait time plus a tow across town.
