I was already out near Ventura on a Friday night when the call came in. A couple had been at a spot near Surfers Point and came back to their 2001 F-150 sitting dead in the lot.
The key was going in, turning, and nothing was happening. No crank, no start. The security light on the dash was staying lit after the key turned, which is exactly what this system does when it doesn't recognize the transponder.
They assumed it was the battery or something mechanical. It wasn't. The key itself had failed, which happens on these. The transponder inside the key head stops communicating, and to the truck it looks like someone just stuck a blank in the ignition. It locks itself out. That's the whole point of the system.
I had the correct key blank already stocked in the van. Cut it on site, programmed it through the diagnostic port with my tool, and ran the security light check to confirm the system accepted it. Light went out after the cycle. Truck started on the first turn.
They'd already called the dealer's after-hours line and were told to have it towed in and wait until Monday. I was there in about 15 minutes and they were driving home before 10pm. What the dealer quoted for Monday morning was a lot more than what they paid me that Friday night. When you're stocked and ready, the timing of the call doesn't change much about how the job goes.
