I was parked on a street in Mar Vista in Oxnard when the owner of a 2017 F-150 met me at the curb. He'd had the fob for years, no issues, and then one morning the truck just stared back at him. Door handles weren't waking the truck up, push-button start wanted nothing to do with the fob. He'd already replaced the CR2450 at an auto parts store. Still nothing.

The battery was new, but whoever had replaced it had cracked the small internal retaining piece that holds the cell against the contact plate. The cell was physically loose inside the case. I reset the contact, seated a fresh CR2450 correctly, and closed the case. Then I ran the full test before I said a word: door handle touch-unlock on both sides, all five buttons at close range, then walking back to test range, then three cold starts back to back.

Everything worked. He looked at the fob like he expected it to quit again.

I told him the testing isn't extra. It's the whole point. If I hand a key back without running every function, I've just moved the problem to later, somewhere less convenient than his own street.

He'd already called the dealer before reaching out to me. They quoted him a new fob and a programming appointment, with no same-day availability. He saved a good chunk and never left Mar Vista.
