I got a call out to East Ventura on a weekday morning. Guy had a 2008 F-150 sitting in his driveway, wouldn't start.

He'd already been to the auto parts store and replaced the CR2032 himself, which was the right first move. Battery was fresh, fob was clicking, doors were locking and unlocking fine. But the truck still wouldn't turn over. Theft light on the dash was steady, not blinking, just sitting there.

That's a specific tell on this generation. A steady theft indicator when you turn the key often means the immobilizer isn't reading the transponder in the key head. The remote side of the fob was working perfectly. The transponder side was the problem.

He had one key total. No spare. The plastic key head housing had a hairline crack running right across where the transponder sits, and the chip inside had shifted just enough to break the read. The remote still worked because that antenna is separate. The transponder coil at the ignition couldn't see it anymore.

I cut and programmed a replacement remote head key on site. Verified the transponder enrolled correctly, confirmed clean starts, walked the three buttons, and left him with a working key in about 35 minutes.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause before he looked me up. He paid a fraction of that, in his own driveway, without towing the truck anywhere.
