Got a call from a woman near Del Sol Park in Oxnard about her 2016 F-150 Lariat. She said the push-to-start had been flashing "No Key Detected" off and on for about eight days. It would start fine in the morning, then refuse by evening. She thought the truck had an electrical gremlin.
Turned out another locksmith had made her a replacement key a couple weeks back. I pulled up to the laundromat where she was waiting and checked the fob first. Opened it on the hood. The CR2450 was already low, which explained the range dropping by evening when temperatures shifted. But the bigger problem was the chip.
I used my VVDI2 to read what was actually written to the transponder. The other tech had used a close-but-wrong chip type. Ford's PATS generation two system on these 13th-gen F-150s will sometimes accept an approximate chip during initial programming, then reject it after a drive cycle when the BCM runs its deeper verification. That is how you end up "stranded on Tuesday when the key worked fine on Monday." Forum guys on F150Forum.com call it the ghost lockout.
I programmed a fresh smart key with the correct 128-bit Texas Instruments DST80 chip matched to her M3N-A2C931426 spec, swapped in a new CR2450, and registered it through the OBD port. Took about 25 minutes. That key has been working for months now.
