Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura isn't exactly where you expect to need a locksmith, but the guy with the 2021 F-150 Lariat was stuck there anyway.
His M3N-A2C931426 smart key had been acting up for weeks. Push-to-start worked if he held the fob against the button, but the passive entry was dead. No handle touch unlock, no auto-unlock when approaching. He'd already swapped the CR2450 twice.
I pulled up the BCM data first. The key was transmitting fine, but the Body Control Module showed DTCs B1681 and U3003-49. Classic gateway timeout codes. Ford's TSB 21-2152 covers this exact issue: the CGEA gateway drops communication if the programming sequence doesn't follow strict timing.
The fix wasn't just programming a new key. I had to update the gateway module first, then clear the DTCs, then program the new fob with proper wake-up commands between each step. The whole process took about 35 minutes, mostly waiting for the gateway resets.
When the new key registered, everything came back. Touch unlock, walk-away lock, remote start from 200 feet. He tested it three times before believing it was actually fixed.
Ford wanted him to leave it for two days. Their quote made him laugh, then made him angry. I handled it right there at the lake for a fraction of that.
