🔧 PRO TIP
On newer push-to-start GMCs, your smart key has a hidden emergency blade inside the fob and a physical lock cylinder on the driver's door. If the fob battery dies, pull the blade out and use the door lock manually, then hold the fob against the start button to get the engine running.

2006 GMC Canyon Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Do you need to tow your 2006 GMC Canyon to the dealer? Almost certainly not. For most GMC models from the mid-2000s through the early 2020s, I handle all-keys-lost right at the vehicle.

A home health aide in a mobile home park in Ventura had her only key die one morning before her first patient visit. Her Canyon was sitting in the carport with a push-to-start system and no fob the car would recognize. She assumed a tow was the only option and started rearranging her patient schedule. I told her to stay put and that I'd come to her.

I connected my Smart Pro to the OBD port and ran the GM smart key all-keys-lost procedure, which walks through the security handshake, clears old key data, and learns new fobs to the body control module. Her remote, FCC ID L2C0007T, was a 3-button proximity fob with an HU100 emergency blade inside. I programmed it in her carport before 9am. She seemed pretty relieved when the push-to-start lit up on the first press.

Her total was about 83. The dealer would have been 181 plus the tow. There are a small number of very new GMC platforms where the immobilizer is locked to GM's online system and my tools don't support AKL yet, and those do need the dealer. But for the vast majority of GMCs on the road, 2005 through about 2022, I do all-keys-lost on-site every week. If your model is one of the rare exceptions, I'll tell you straight up instead of wasting your time.
