2010 GMC Canyon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Dos Vientos, the trailhead parking lot sits right where the neighborhood meets the open space. A hiking guide parks there early and leaves late, and one afternoon his 2010 GMC Canyon was the last truck in the lot with no key to start it. Somewhere on the trail, it was gone.
He called a locksmith first. That locksmith told him the ignition would probably need to be drilled out and replaced, and read him a number that made him put the phone down and think for a minute. Then he called me.
I drove out to Dos Vientos and got to work on the door lock with a decoder tool. Reading each wafer position without touching or damaging anything inside the cylinder. The lock comes apart in a way that tells you the exact cut the original key had. Once I had that, I cut a fresh blade to match.
The 2010 Canyon uses a transponder key, no remote, no fob. Just a chipped blade. I programmed the new key through the OBD port using the timed security relearn that these older GM trucks require when all keys are lost. The truck runs through a series of timed cycles during that process, so there is some waiting involved. You can not rush it.
When it was done, I locked and unlocked the door manually, started the truck, cycled the ignition, and verified the security light behavior on the dash. Everything settled the way it should.
His lock was not drilled. His ignition was not touched. The truck looked exactly the same as when I arrived. The other locksmith's plan would have had him replacing parts that never needed replacing. Getting a spare made while you still have a working key is always the better call, but when the only key is gone, this is how you handle it right.
