My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for us. We carry the specialized tools to pull the broken piece without damaging the ignition cylinder, which matters because Canyon ignition cylinders are not a cheap part to replace if things go sideways.

Once the piece is out, we can cut a new key either from the extracted fragment or by decoding your lock directly. Programming happens on the same visit. If the cylinder itself has wear that contributed to the break, we'll tell you honestly before you decide how to proceed. Most extractions on these trucks don't require a cylinder replacement, but it depends on how the key broke and whether anything shifted inside.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does my 2019 Canyon use one?

A transponder key looks like a regular metal key but has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert it and turn the ignition, the vehicle's immobilizer sends a signal to the chip. The chip responds with a code the system is expecting. If the code matches, the engine is authorized to start. If it doesn't, the vehicle cranks but won't fire, or won't crank at all depending on how the system responds.

Your 2019 Canyon uses this setup as its theft deterrent. There are no buttons, no fob, no battery in the key. The chip is passive, meaning it draws power from the signal the car sends rather than from its own power source. That also means there's nothing to wear out in the key itself other than the blade. If your key stops working, it's usually a programming issue or a damaged chip from physical abuse, not a dead battery.

My GMC is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check?

On a transponder turn-key setup like the 2019 Canyon, the first thing to check is whether the key blade itself is in good shape. A bent or worn blade that doesn't seat fully in the cylinder can break the read between the chip and the antenna ring around the ignition.

If the blade looks fine, try your second key if you have one. If the spare works and the other doesn't, the chip in the non-working key may have been damaged, possibly from being near a strong magnet or from a hard impact. If neither key works, you're likely looking at an immobilizer antenna issue or a programming loss rather than two failed keys at once.

I bought a replacement key blank online. Can you just cut and program it, or do I need to buy the blank from you?

Depends on the blank. We can work with a customer-supplied blank, but here's the honest version of that conversation: not all blanks sold online for GM vehicles of this generation are what they claim to be. Some are mislabeled, some use chip substitutes that program fine initially and then drop off. If we cut and program a blank that fails two weeks later, you're paying for the job twice.

If the blank you bought is from a reputable supplier and it checks out when I look at it, no problem. If it looks questionable, I'll tell you before we start. Buying the blank through us means we stand behind the whole job, not just the labor.

Can I add a second key myself at home, or does it always require a locksmith?

On many GM vehicles of this generation with a conventional transponder ignition, there is an onboard relearn process that lets you add a key yourself if you already have two working programmed keys on hand. You need both existing keys present to initiate the sequence.

If you only have one working key, that onboard method is off the table. Adding a key from a one-key or no-key situation requires a programmer with GM capability. That's where we come in. It's one of the more common calls we get in Thousand Oaks, someone who lost a key, put off replacing it, and now has no fallback for the self-service route.
