2012 GMC Canyon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2012 GMC Canyon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Casa Conejo, early on a Saturday morning, I got a call from a guy who fishes the lakes and reservoirs around Thousand Oaks. He'd had his Canyon parked near a boat launch and his only key had gone somewhere between the dock, the truck bed, and the water. He wasn't sure which. The truck was just sitting there, locked, with nobody coming until he called me.

He figured he was towing to a dealer come Monday. I told him that wasn't necessary.

When I got there, the Canyon was sitting in a gravel lot with the morning light just coming up. I picked the door with my decoder tool and read every wafer position to get the exact cut depths. That's the cleanest way to do it on these - you decode the lock and you know the cut is right before the key is even made.

Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost sequence for the GM theft deterrent system. That clears any previously learned keys and opens a registration window for the new one. The timed loop on these mid-size trucks is not something you can skip - you have to wait it out. I've seen other guys try to rush it and end up starting over.

New transponder key, cut to the decoded specs, programmed, tested. The Canyon started right there in the gravel lot. I cut him a spare on the spot so this wouldn't happen again on the water.

He'd already called the dealer out of habit. They told him Monday, a tow, and a number that made the spare key an easy yes.
