Out in Conejo Oaks, off one of those quiet streets that backs up against the hills, I got a call from a Canyon owner who had been dealing with an intermittent no-start for about two weeks. Not every time, just enough to make him nervous about getting stranded.
He had already been to a parts store and run a battery test. Battery was fine. He had googled the symptoms and convinced himself the fuel pump was on its way out. He was mentally preparing for a big repair bill.
I asked him one question before I drove out: how old is the key, and has it ever been dropped or sat in a cup holder with change and coins rattling against it? He paused. Said the key had been on a ring with about eight other keys for the four years he had owned the truck, and yes, it had been dropped a handful of times.

When I got there and looked at the key under a light, the transponder head had a hairline crack along the housing near the bow. Inside that housing is the chip. When a key like this takes repeated impact, the chip or the antenna winding inside can shift just enough to cause intermittent reads. Not every start attempt fails, because angle and temperature affect the signal window. But it gets worse over time.
I cut a new key to the vehicle and programmed the transponder to the truck right there in his driveway. First start, clean as anything. He kept saying he had been sure it was the fuel pump.
The dealer, for what it is worth, had quoted him a wait of several days for a key appointment on top of the diagnostic fee just to confirm the key was the issue. He paid a fraction of that and never moved the truck.
