Over in Thille/Montalvo, I got a call from a guy who thought his Canyon's remote was completely dead. He'd already been to a big-box auto parts store, had them scan it, and they told him the fob was bad and he needed a new one programmed by the dealer. He was ready to take a day off work to get to the GMC store.
He met me in his driveway off Telephone Road. The truck started fine with the key, no issues there. I asked him when he last changed the battery in the fob. He looked at me like that wasn't a real question.
CR2032 out, new one in, clean the contacts while it's open. Range came back immediately. Locked and unlocked from across the driveway. All three buttons responding.
He said he felt a little ridiculous. I told him not to, because it's genuinely easy to miss on these. The 2006 Canyon fob doesn't give you a low-battery warning on the dash. It just gets weaker and weaker until it stops, and most people assume the fob is done rather than a battery that costs less than a coffee.
He did not need the dealer. He did not need a new fob. He needed four minutes and a CR2032. I carry a stock of them in the van for exactly this reason.
