2023 GMC Canyon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a "remote" key and what does the 2023 Canyon use?

A remote key combines a physical key blade you turn in the ignition with a separate fob that handles lock, unlock, and the other buttons. The fob runs on a CR2450 battery. The key blade and the fob work independently. If the fob battery dies you can still drive, you just lose the remote functions until you replace the battery.

Q: My GMC is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Start with the CR2450. A low battery reads as a partial signal and the system can drop it entirely. Swap the battery, make sure it seats flat against the contacts, and retest. If the warning clears, you're done. If it comes back or you're also seeing a message about the vehicle security system, that's a different problem.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself to my 2023 Canyon?

No. The 2023 Canyon doesn't have a DIY button-sequence or ignition-turn relearn for adding a remote. Pairing a new fob requires a professional scan tool that communicates with the body control module. The online fob isn't a wasted purchase necessarily, since we can use it, but you still need someone with the right equipment to register it to your vehicle. Buying the hardware yourself and calling us for the programming is actually a pretty common setup.

Q: Can you make a key if I've lost both of them completely?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2023 Canyon is a job we handle. It takes longer than adding a spare because the module has to go through a full reset sequence before it will accept new key data, but it's a known procedure. We bring the tools, connect at the OBD port, clear the existing key memory, and program fresh. The old lost keys get erased in the process so they can't be used to start the vehicle.

2023 GMC Canyon Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A college student was home for break, staying at an apartment in Downtown Ventura in one of those spots with tight visitor parking where you really can't afford to be stuck. Her 2023 GMC Canyon needed a replacement key.

She'd already tried another locksmith. That guy failed the programming, left a stack of fault codes sitting in the body control module, and still charged her for the attempt. After that, the car wouldn't accept any key at all.

She found me online, read through my reviews, and called. She was upfront about being nervous. Said she felt like she'd already been burned once and didn't know who to trust.

I plugged into the OBD port and saw it right away. The previous attempt had used a procedure that didn't match the 2023 system, and the module was sitting in a confused state with incomplete key data from the failed session. I cleared it out, verified the module was clean, and ran a proper key learning sequence from scratch. When the confirmation came up on my screen I turned it toward her so she could see it herself.

The car started clean on the first try. She just sat there for a second before putting it in gear, like she was waiting for something to go wrong again. Nothing did.

The dealer had quoted her a significant amount just to diagnose and undo what the other locksmith did, before even getting to a new key. I didn't charge extra for the cleanup. That's not a courtesy, it's just how the job is supposed to go.

GMC Canyon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for us. We use specialized tools to pull the broken piece without damaging the ignition cylinder. Once it's out, we cut a new key and program it on the spot. On these newer Canyons the ignition cylinder isn't something you want to mess with blind, because a botched extraction that scores the cylinder walls turns a simple extraction into a full cylinder replacement.
