2008 GMC Canyon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2008 GMC Canyon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy near Surfers Point in Ventura, somewhere around 9:45 at night. He'd been out near the water and his only key to a 2008 Canyon was just gone. Not misplaced -- gone. He was standing in a dark parking area, couldn't get in, and was about to call a tow because he didn't know what else to do.

First thing I told him: don't tow it yet. Then I walked him through finding the VIN through the windshield, lower left corner at the base of the glass. He found it. His insurance app had the rest of what I needed for ownership verification.

That VIN told me everything before I even left. I knew the key type, what blank to pull, what the cut profile needed to look like, and what programming approach this truck responds to. I loaded up the van and headed out.

When I got there he was sitting on a curb near the truck, phone in hand. I cut the new key under my work light, confirmed the cut, then ran the programming sequence to pair the transponder chip to the vehicle. Key went in. Turned over on the first try. He sat in the driver's seat for a second like he was waiting for something to go wrong.

Nothing went wrong. He drove home.

The dealer would have been closed, required a tow, and taken at least a day or two. He paid a fraction of what that whole ordeal would have cost, and he was on the road in under an hour from when he called.
