Jaguar key programming isn't a dealer-only procedure on most models from the mid-2000s through the late 2010s. The car's KVM or immobilizer checks the smart fob through an encrypted exchange. Programming a new key means reading that module, calculating the security codes, and writing the correct data to a blank fob. A watch dealer at his vintage watch shop in Carpinteria on a Saturday afternoon was certain his 2000 Jaguar XJ needed the dealer for a new key.
