I was parked at the bottom of Mission Canyon Road when she called. The canyon gets quiet fast up there, big properties set back from the road, and she was standing in the driveway of one of them next to a 2013 XJ, both keys in her hand, neither one doing anything useful.
She'd already tried the obvious: fresh CR2032 in both fobs. Doors still wouldn't respond to the buttons. Cleared the fault, cycled the system. Both fobs woke right up. Walked every function: lock, unlock, all five buttons, touch unlock on both front handles. Everything back to normal, no new keys needed.
She'd been quoted a pair of replacement smart keys at the dealer before she called me. I charged her for a diagnostic visit. She saved a good chunk and kept her original keys.
That's the job I actually enjoy. Not because it was fast, but because the right answer wasn't the expensive one.
