Got a call from a woman near Rincon Beach Park in Carpinteria who was running donations for a charity estate sale. Her 2001 Jaguar XJ was sitting at the thrift store lot and wouldn't start. She had furniture to pick up from a donor's home within the hour, movers already on the way, and the car just sat there cranking.
She tried the dealer first. Earliest opening was next day. I was 20 minutes out.
When I got there the dash was throwing the normal no-start behavior for a failed transponder handshake: engine cranks strong, fuel pump primes, but the SJB kills the injector pulse after about two seconds. Classic X308 immobilizer lockout. I pulled the flip key apart on her hood. The NHVWB1U241 remote side was fine, buttons responded, CR2032 had juice. But the Temic transponder coil had a hairline crack right at the solder joint. Probably years of the key getting tossed around in a purse.
I cut a fresh 1X43-15K601-AB spec blank, loaded a new transponder, and programmed through the OBD-II port using JLR-compatible diagnostic software. Full process took about 40 minutes, including testing all four remote buttons and cycling the immobilizer a few times to make sure it held.
She made the pickup on time. The movers never knew anything went sideways. The whole job cost her a fraction of what the dealer quoted plus a day of waiting.
