The call came from Sandyland Cove on a Tuesday morning. An estate sale coordinator had a donor pickup scheduled, furniture coming out of a private home in Carpinteria, movers already in motion, and the donor was elderly with a narrow availability window. Her 2008 Jaguar XJ was sitting in a parking lot and would not start. The fob had simply stopped talking to the car.
She called the Jaguar dealer first. Next available appointment was the following day. She called me and I was twenty minutes away.
When I got there she was standing next to the car checking her phone, running the math on whether the pickup could still happen. I got the door open, connected through the OBD port, and pulled up the key module. The fob was reading weakly and the system was not completing the handshake. The battery was original, which on an eight-year-old fob is not a small detail. A fresh CR2032 is always step one, but this one had gone past battery territory. The fob itself had given out.
I had a compatible replacement in the van. Programmed the new fob through the diagnostic interface, tested the start, walked every button, confirmed the old fob was cleared from the system so it could not be used if it turned up somewhere later.
From her first call to the engine running was under an hour. The pickup happened on schedule. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that would have stung even before the tow bill, and that was assuming she waited a full day. She did not have a full day.
That is the job most of the time. Not glamorous. Just someone who needed to be somewhere and needed the car to work.
