2005 Jaguar XJ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote flip key and why does the 2005 XJ use one?

The remote flip key is a folding key where the blade pivots into the fob body when not in use. On the 2005 XJ, that fob carries four buttons for remote functions and houses a transponder chip in the body that the vehicle's immobilizer reads when you turn the ignition. The blade itself turns in a conventional ignition cylinder.

Q: What equipment does a locksmith actually need to program a key for this car?

JLR vehicles from this era are not something every locksmith can handle. The immobilizer programming requires a tool with genuine JLR coverage and the ability to communicate with the relevant control modules through the OBD port. We use professional-grade immobilizer programmers with JLR-specific coverage for key registration on the 2005 XJ. For the blade, the XJ of this generation uses a Tibbe-style lock, which is a six-cut rotating disc cylinder.

Q: My XJ starts fine but the remote stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2005 XJ, the remote receiver and the transponder system operate separately. If the car starts and the transponder side is happy, but the lock and unlock buttons stopped responding, the first thing to rule out is the CR2032 battery. These fobs will keep communicating with the immobilizer at lower battery levels longer than the remote RF signal holds up. So the remote dies before the start function does.

Q: The blade on my flip key is loose and wobbles in the fob. Is that a problem?

Yes, and it's one of the most common wear issues on flip keys this age. The pivot pin that holds the blade wears down over years of use. A blade that doesn't lock fully open can slip while you're turning the ignition, and over time that puts stress on the ignition cylinder itself. If the blade is still intact and the cut is readable, the fob body can often be replaced without recutting.

2005 Jaguar XJ Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was in Concha Loma on a Tuesday for a different call when my phone picked up a message from a music teacher who gives violin lessons out of a studio in Carpinteria. She had called the dealer Monday morning about her 2005 Jaguar XJ.

They told her Thursday at the earliest, maybe Friday, depending on parts availability. She teaches every afternoon and does school pickup every morning. That's not a four-day inconvenience. That's four days of cancellations and borrowed rides.

I called her back on the spot and told her I could be there that day.

The XJ was in the lot, and the fob she handed me had a blade that had been wiggling for a while. The pivot was worn and the blade wasn't locking open cleanly. She thought that might be part of the problem. It wasn't the whole problem, but it wasn't nothing either.

I pulled my JLR-capable programmer, connected to the vehicle, and ran the key registration process. The immobilizer recognized the new fob, the blade got cut on-site to the vehicle, and I ran through every button and every function before packing up. Lock, unlock, the blade in the ignition, all of it.

She made afternoon lessons. The dealer came up once in conversation, mostly because of the timeline difference. That was it.

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to check before you hand anyone your Jaguar keys. First, look up the business name directly on Google, Yelp, and the California BSIS license lookup. Scam operations cycle through dozens of local-sounding names that all route to the same call center. If the business name doesn't match a verifiable BSIS license number they can give you on the phone, walk away. Every legitimate locksmith company operating in California is required to carry one.
