2012 Jaguar XJ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Scam locksmiths specifically target luxury vehicle calls because the owner is already stressed and the car has a reputation for expensive repairs. The pattern is predictable: a low number quoted by phone, then a hard pivot once the tech sees the badge on the car. EZ Car Keyz has over 100,000 followers across YouTube and TikTok where you can watch us do this exact category of work.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. When we finish, the fob is fully enrolled in your vehicle's security system -- proximity detection, push-to-start authorization, remote lock and unlock, and the emergency blade are all tested on your specific car before we leave. The factory fob ID for your XJ is confirmed against the vehicle during programming, not just paired and handed over.

Q: My XJ is showing a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is fine. What is actually going on?

This comes up a lot on this generation. A fresh CR2032 is the first move and it fixes the issue more often than people expect, but when it doesn't, the next most common cause is the antenna that picks up the fob signal near the start button or door handle.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2012 XJ. Can I program it myself?

No. This system does not have a button sequence or ignition-turn relearn. A locksmith or dealer with the right diagnostic equipment has to enroll it. Buying the fob online is fine -- just know the programming step still requires a professional visit. And bring your existing working fob to that appointment. If you don't, the job gets treated as all-keys-lost, which takes longer and costs more.

2012 Jaguar XJ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a music teacher who runs violin lessons out of a studio near The Mesa in Santa Barbara. Monday morning, she couldn't get her 2012 XJ to recognize the fob. Push-to-start showed a key-not-detected warning. She'd already swapped the battery. Still nothing.

She called the dealer first. Thursday was the earliest opening. She had afternoon lessons every day that week and two kids to get to school in the morning. Four days without a car wasn't a schedule inconvenience -- it was four days of canceled lessons and scrambled logistics.

I was in The Mesa lot that same Monday afternoon with my programming equipment. Connected, pulled up the Jaguar smart key menu, confirmed the existing key was still enrolled, and registered the new fob alongside it. Cut the emergency blade on-site, tested proximity walking up to the car, confirmed push-to-start, verified lock and unlock. Everything live before I closed my kit.

She picked her kids up that afternoon on schedule. The dealer Thursday appointment became a non-event. She mentioned the dealer quote as almost a footnote -- just glad it wasn't a four-day ordeal.

Jaguar XJ Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Jaguar vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is a California BSIS licensed locksmith company (LCO#6792), fully insured, and NASTF Vehicle Security Professional certified. Jaguar smart key work on this generation XJ requires specialized JLR-compatible programming equipment and familiarity with how the vehicle security system handles key enrollment and memory management. Most general locksmiths skip Jaguar entirely because the tooling investment is real and the margin for error on a luxury vehicle call is low.
