Yes, and this comes up more than you'd think on XJs that have changed hands a few times. The 2014 XJ smart fob has a small emergency blade tucked inside the housing. It's easy to lose, easy to break, and sometimes just absent on cars that came through auction or secondary dealers.

If the shell is cracked but the internals are intact, I can transfer the electronics into a new housing and cut a replacement blade to your vehicle. No reprogramming needed for that part of the job - the blade is mechanical, and the electronics move over as-is. If the internal board is damaged, that's a full replacement and programming job, which I do on site.

Either way, I verify the blade actually works in the door lock before I leave. That sounds obvious, but it's the step that matters most when you need it at 11pm and the fob battery is dead.

The emergency blade is the backup for when the fob battery dies or the proximity system has a hiccup - you pull the blade out, use it to physically unlock the door, then hold the fob against the start button so the passive transponder can be read at close range.

The fob on this vehicle has five buttons. Lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons handle other functions depending on how yours is equipped. Adding or replacing a key on this system is not a DIY job - it requires diagnostic equipment to register the new fob to the vehicle's security system.

My XJ says the smart key is not recognized. Where do I start?

Start with the CR2032 in the fob. Swap it for a fresh one and test again. If you have a second fob, try that one too.

If both fobs are throwing the same warning, the issue is almost certainly on the vehicle side, not the keys. On this generation XJ, the most common culprits are a weak 12V battery (see the pro tip above) or an antenna or receiver module that has gone soft. There are passive antenna loops in the door handles and around the cabin that the system depends on to detect the fob at range.

One thing worth trying before you call anyone: hold the fob directly against the start button. If the car starts that way, the passive transponder in the fob is working and the problem is with the long-range receiver, not the key itself. That tells you a lot.

If neither fob works even held to the button, that points to the vehicle's security system needing diagnosis. Call me and I can run that on site.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. There is no button sequence or ignition cycle that will register a new fob on the 2014 XJ. The vehicle's security system requires a diagnostic connection to enroll any new key - whether it's one fob or an all-keys-lost situation. The fob you bought online is just hardware until someone with the right equipment pairs it to your specific car.
