What we don't do is guess our way through it. If the system pushes back, I read why before I go further. The goal is a clean enrollment, not a fob that works for two days.

Expect the job to take longer than a standard spare-key add. Budget a few hours for an all-keys-lost visit, and have the vehicle accessible and ideally in a flat, accessible spot. A steep Riviera driveway is fine, I've been up there. Just not a parking structure or somewhere with no cell signal, because the authorization tools need to reach back to verify credentials in real time.

This is a real pattern on these cars and the answer isn't always the fob. Intermittent detection on the push-button start can come from a few directions: a weakening fob battery is the first and easiest thing to rule out, so swap the CR2032 before you draw any conclusions. If the battery is fresh and the problem continues, the issue may be with the antenna that reads the fob inside the cabin, or with the module that manages keyless entry and start authorization. Jaguar owners on the forums report cases where the fob tested fine on a programmer, the battery was new, but the car-side antenna loop had a degraded connection.

The tell is whether the problem follows the fob or stays with the car. If a known-good second fob has the same intermittent behavior, you're looking at the vehicle side. If the second fob works cleanly, the first fob has the problem. That narrows it fast and saves you from replacing things you don't need to.

Can I buy a fob online and just have someone program it?

You can try, but verify the factory fob designation on the listing matches before you buy.
