There's a small British car specialist tucked into the Via Real Corridor in Carpinteria. Not a dealership, just a shop that knows European iron. They called me on a Tuesday because a 2009 Jaguar XJ had come in for mechanical work and somewhere in the shuffle, the only key went missing. The customer was due to pick up that afternoon.
The shop owner was calm about it, but you could tell the math was running in his head. Dealer, days out, unhappy customer. He'd already made one call that didn't pan out.
I got there with my gear and read what I needed from the OBD port to pull the security data and generate a working key. The replacement fob matched the factory setup exactly: five buttons, CR2032, the right blade cut to the vehicle's lock profile. I programmed it, enrolled it to the car, and tested every function before I put my tools away. Lock, unlock, all five buttons, the emergency blade in the door, and the engine starting normally.
Start to finish was just under 40 minutes. The shop finished buttoning up the repair, the customer came in, never knew there had been a problem. The shop owner texted me later just to say it went smooth. That's the whole job sometimes. No drama, just done.
The dealer route on an all-keys-lost XJ isn't quick. They need to order, verify ownership, schedule the programming. The shop would have been holding that car overnight at minimum, probably longer.
