A couple out near Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve on a Friday night called me around 9:30. They had walked back to their 2007 Jaguar XJ after dinner and the fob did nothing. No chirp, no unlock, no dash acknowledgment. The message on the center display just read "SMART KEY NOT FOUND" and they figured the car was done until a dealer opened Monday morning.
I was 12 minutes out. Already had KR55WK49244 fob housings, fresh CR2032 cells, and HU101 emergency blades stocked in labeled drawers behind the driver's seat.
Popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was completely flat, reading under 2 volts. Swapped it, but the fob still wouldn't handshake with the car. The key had dropped out of the vehicle's security module memory, which happens sometimes on these X358 cars when the battery goes fully dead and the fob sits unpowered long enough. Quick re-registration through the OBD port using the SDD protocol, and the fob came back online. Engine fired on the first press of the start button.
They both just stood there for a second, like they were waiting for something else to go wrong.
It was a dead coin cell and a five-minute re-pair. They drove home Friday night instead of calling a tow truck and waiting through the weekend. When everything is stocked, a 9:30 PM Friday call is the same as a 9 AM Tuesday call.
