2007 Jaguar XJ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement key last on a 2007 XJ?

The programming itself doesn't expire or degrade. A properly paired fob on this generation can go years with nothing more than a periodic CR2032 swap - most owners on XJ forums report changing the battery every two to four years depending on use. Where these fobs fail over time is the physical shell: the buttons wear through, the case cracks, or the battery contacts get a little oxidation. The electronics inside hold up.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. The work is covered. That said, when a correctly programmed fob goes intermittent on a 2007 XJ, the car is usually the story, not the key. This generation had known antenna and body control module issues that show up as a key-not-detected warning even when the fob is fine. Owners on XJ forums describe situations where both fobs fail simultaneously, which is a strong indicator the vehicle's receiver side is the problem.

Q: I have two fobs for my XJ and both stopped working at the same time. Is that the key or the car?

Almost certainly the car. Two fobs failing simultaneously points to something on the vehicle side - the key receiver, the body control module, or a wiring issue feeding the antenna circuit. It's a pattern that shows up repeatedly in XJ owner forums for this generation. A single fob failing is a fob problem. Both fobs failing at once means they were both reporting to something that stopped listening.

Q: Can I add a spare key to my 2007 XJ without going to a dealer?

Yes. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic tools can register an additional fob to the car at your location. You don't need to go to a dealer and you don't need to tow it anywhere. The job requires the OBD port and the correct software for this generation's security system - there's no onboard button sequence or ignition-turn shortcut on a smart key vehicle like this. Bring any working fobs you have to the appointment so they stay active.

2007 Jaguar XJ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Friday night at Rincon Point. I was already wrapping another job in Carpinteria when the call came in - a couple had walked out to their 2007 XJ after dinner, keyed up the fob, and nothing happened.

No locks, no lights, no response. They'd been standing next to the car for about fifteen minutes trying to figure out whether to call a tow or wait until Monday for a dealer appointment.

I was twelve minutes away.

When I pulled up, the husband had the fob in one hand and was halfway through explaining what had happened when I asked him to hand it over. Popped it open right there under the parking lot light. CR2032 was the original - soft, low voltage. That explained the no-response, but I wanted to confirm the fob hadn't also dropped sync before I promised them a five-minute fix.

Fresh cell in, held it to the start button. Engine turned over. That told me the fob was still paired but the battery had just collapsed below operating threshold. No re-registration needed. I walked both door handles, tested all five buttons, and let it cycle a few times to confirm it wasn't intermittent.

He asked if the dealer would have done the same thing. I told him the dealer probably would have, Monday morning, a few days from now, for a number I wasn't going to try to match.

They drove home that night. That's the whole story.

Jaguar XJ Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket fobs for the 2007 Jaguar XJ?▼

We use OEM-spec fobs that match the factory FCC ID for this vehicle. The reason that matters on this generation XJ is that the immobilizer system pairs to specific fob hardware. A fob that was previously coded to another vehicle may not be re-programmable to yours - some JLR units from this era are effectively one-time paired, and a used fob bought online carries that risk.
