2000 Jaguar XJ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Carpinteria?

Downtown Carpinteria and the surrounding area is part of the regular service zone. Most calls get a response within 30 minutes, sometimes sooner depending on traffic and where exactly you are parked. When you call, I confirm the year, model, and key situation, make sure I have the right blank loaded, and head straight to you.

Q: Can I get a key made the same day I call?

Yes. The blanks and programming equipment for the 2000 XJ travel with me on every call. Nothing gets ordered and shipped. No appointment scheduled for next week. Jaguar dealers typically need the car dropped off, sometimes for more than a day, even for work that takes an hour once someone actually gets to it. I treat every call as same-day. You call, I show up, you leave with a working key.

Q: My 2000 XJ cranks fine but won't start and there's a warning on the dash. Is this a key problem?

It can be. The 2000 XJ has an immobilizer that reads the transponder in your key every time you try to start the car. If the transponder stops communicating, the engine management system cuts fuel or ignition to prevent the car from starting, even though the starter motor still turns over normally. That crank-but-no-start pattern, combined with a key-related warning on the dash, is a classic sign the immobilizer is not seeing a valid signal from the key.

Q: I found a replacement transponder key online for the 2000 XJ. Can I just have it cut and use it?

Cutting it is only half the job. The blade gets the key into the ignition, but the car won't start until the transponder inside that key is programmed to match your specific immobilizer. An unprogrammed key blank, even a correctly cut one, will crank the engine and go nowhere. The immobilizer has to recognize the new transponder before it will allow the car to run.

2000 Jaguar XJ Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a vintage watch dealer in Downtown Carpinteria, runs a small shop off the main strip, the kind of place with good lighting and glass cases full of things people take seriously. He called me on a Saturday afternoon about his 2000 Jaguar XJ.

His mechanic had told him Jaguar key work was dealer territory, full stop. That it was locked down and nobody outside a Jaguar service center could touch it.

I've heard that one before. It gets repeated enough that owners believe it before they ever check.

He had one working key and wanted a spare. Reasonable request. The XJ from that era uses a transponder key that talks to the immobilizer through an antenna ring around the ignition barrel. Programming a new key means getting the immobilizer to recognize and accept a new transponder. I do that through the OBD port with the right equipment. It is not a mystery procedure. It just requires the tools and the know-how.

I pulled up to his shop, he had the working key ready, and I ran the job on site while he stood there watching. Cut a new blade to match his lock, programmed the transponder, tested it through several start cycles. The car didn't care that we were parked next to a display case of Rolexes instead of a service bay.

He mentioned what the dealer quoted and the weekday appointment they needed. I didn't say much about it. The car was running, he had a spare key in his hand, and it was still Saturday afternoon.

How long does a 2000 Jaguar XJ key replacement take?▼

If you have at least one working key, adding a spare is typically a one-visit job that runs about an hour on site, including cutting the blade, programming the transponder, and verifying the car starts correctly on the new key. All-keys-lost takes longer because the immobilizer enrollment process has to be handled differently without a known-good reference key present, but it is still same-day work in most cases.
