I got a call from a Euro specialist shop on the west side of Santa Barbara, not far from Hope Ranch. Another locksmith had attempted an all-keys-lost job on a 2010 XJ. Somewhere in the middle of reading the smart key module, the process died. Power interruption, wrong sequence, something. The module locked up and the car wouldn't recognize any fob at all. The shop couldn't move forward, the customer couldn't drive home, and the first locksmith wasn't answering.
They called me as a last resort.
This generation XJ stores key data in the smart key module, and when a read or write fails mid-process, you don't just try again. You have to go back to what was there before, which means recovering the original data if you can, and writing a clean key file from scratch. I brought the bench equipment, pulled the module, read it, and worked the recovery. It took time. The module had to come out, get read on the bench, and go back in. The whole job ran close to two hours.
The shop owner stood there watching most of it. At one point he said something like, "I didn't even know you could recover it once it was like this." That's the part of the job that doesn't get explained upfront. Most of the time a module recovery is possible if the right tools are used and nobody panics and tries a second write on top of a corrupted first one.
The car left running that afternoon. The customer paid a fraction of what a dealer tow-and-repair would have cost, and the shop had an answer to give the next person who called asking why an XJ key job isn't something to hand off to a generalist.
