She was standing in a rental car return lot in Rancho Bernardo, right near Westwood, early on a weekday morning. She had flown in, handled her business, and was ready to drive her own 2006 Audi S4 home. Except her only key was not in her bag. She had left it at the hotel she checked out of an hour earlier. All-keys-lost on this generation of Audi means you have to go in through the OBD port, read the security data from the immobilizer, and use that to program a fresh key. No shortcut. I connected my programmer, pulled what I needed from the car, cut a new key blade on my machine, and programmed the transponder and the remote functions on site.
Lock, unlock, trunk release, engine start. All four. Tested twice before I handed it over.
She dropped the rental, walked to her S4, and drove to the airport with time to breathe. The dealer's next-week appointment would have cost her a rental extension, a rebooking fee, and days of waiting. She paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted and left on her original flight.
The job itself was maybe 40 minutes. The part that mattered was doing it before noon.
