Fairbanks Ranch is the kind of neighborhood where the cars sitting in the driveway cost more than most people's houses. I got a call on a Saturday evening from a guest staying at one of the private estate rentals near the Rancho Santa Fe resort corridor. He had a 2011 Audi S4, no keys, and a flight out Sunday morning.
The story was familiar. One fob had been missing for weeks. The second one died that afternoon, probably from the battery going flat after he accidentally left it in a jacket pocket pressed against something metal. He tried the backup blade inside the fob on a door handle out of habit, remembered the S4 does not have a traditional key cylinder on the driver door, and then just stood there.
No key slot. No way to turn anything. The car was completely dark and unresponsive.
I drove out with my ACDP and a pre-sourced fob shell. All-keys-lost on this generation Audi is not a flip-key job. The immobilizer system on the B8 S4 uses encrypted key data tied to the vehicle's specific security module, so new keys cannot just be cloned or copied. The security data has to be read directly from the module hardware, sent through a calculation process, and returned as a usable file before a new key can be generated and enrolled. That is the step that locks most people out, and the step dealers use to justify the wait and the price.
I read the module data on site, ran the calculation, got the file back, generated a working key, and enrolled it through OBD. Then I walked every function: proximity detection at both doors, the start button, the lock and unlock buttons, the emergency blade fitment. Everything confirmed.
He was back inside the car before 10 p.m. The dealer would have been closed until Monday, and the quote for an all-keys-lost job on an S4 at an Audi store is not a small number. He saved a significant chunk and kept his Sunday flight.
