2005 BMW X3 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

The call came from a woman parked in the lot right at Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. She'd dropped her only key on the pavement getting out, and the fob body had cracked clean along the seam. The key blade was still in her hand, but the remote was completely dead and she wasn't sure what was still functional inside the shell.

She'd already tried holding the broken halves together and pressing the buttons. Nothing. Then she tried getting into the car manually with the blade and the lock turned, so at least she was inside. But she had no idea if the car would start, and she wasn't going to find out the hard way and get stranded.

I drove out to the lot. When I got there she handed me the fob in two pieces, held together with a rubber band she'd found in her glove box.

The CR2032 had popped loose in the fall, which explained the dead remote. The transponder inside was intact, which was the important part. I tested continuity on the circuit board before committing to anything. Board was fine. I seated the battery correctly, carefully fitted the electronics into a new housing, and recut the blade to match.

Then came the part that actually matters with these: verifying the transponder was communicating with the immobilizer. I confirmed the car recognized the key, ran through the remote functions, and tested everything before she put it in her pocket.

She went from a rubber-banded pile of plastic to two working keys. The dealer had been her first call that morning. They told her to have the car towed in and quoted her a wait time measured in days. I was done in under an hour, on site, in a parking lot thirty feet from the beach.
