I was parked off Euclid near the Montgomery side of Chula Vista when the call came in. Owner of a 2016 BMW X3, four-button smart key, said she'd been getting an intermittent key-not-detected warning for about a week and then that morning the car just refused to acknowledge the fob at all.
When I got there she'd already tried holding the key against the start button, which was the right instinct. The car did crank that way, so the backup antenna was still reading the transponder. That told me the immobilizer itself wasn't the problem. The issue was the wireless side of the fob.
I popped the CR2032 out and the cell tested low. Not dead, just low enough that the fob's radio signal was dropping in and out depending on temperature and distance. Swapped the battery, seated it properly, and tested range from across the parking lot. Clean lock, clean unlock, clean start from a normal pocket-carry distance.
Then I did the part that takes an extra few minutes but matters. I walked every button. Lock, unlock, all four functions in sequence. I checked that the vehicle was acknowledging the fob consistently across three consecutive start cycles, not just once. And I verified the door handle sensors were responding, because on these X3s, intermittent fob issues sometimes mask a handle sensor that's already on its way out and you don't want to leave the owner thinking it's fixed when there's a second problem sitting underneath.
Everything came back clean. She didn't need a new key at all. She needed the right diagnosis first, which is exactly why I don't skip the testing phase. A quick battery swap and a handoff would have looked like a fix. Walking the whole system is what confirmed it actually was one.
