I got a call from a guy in Spring Valley Village who had been stranded in a trail-head parking lot near the neighborhood for the better part of an afternoon. He'd had his only key on him the whole hike, but somewhere between the trail and the lot, the fob stopped working entirely. The car wouldn't unlock, wouldn't respond to the remote at all. The immobilizer system on this generation X3 stores security data in a control module, and to program a new key from scratch, you have to read that module, pull the security values from the engine control unit, sync everything up, and write the new key into a fresh slot. You can't skip steps. The module read, the data extraction, the key generation, all of it has to happen in the right order.
His key started the car on the first try, which is how you want it to go. He asked me how long that would have taken at the dealer. I told him at minimum two or three days because dealers VIN-order the key, and that's before they even look at the car. He'd already lost most of one day just waiting for me. Getting back behind the wheel the same afternoon was the part that mattered.
