I got a call from a woman parked in the Eden Gardens area of Solana Beach on a Tuesday morning. She had a showing lined up across town in under two hours and her 2011 X3 was sitting there completely unresponsive. The fob wouldn't unlock the doors, the backup entry procedure wasn't working the way she expected, and she was starting to spiral a little.
She told me she'd already tried the fob a dozen times standing right next to the door. That told me something - either the battery was truly dead or the fob itself had an issue, not a range problem.
I was at her location in about 25 minutes. First thing I did was use the emergency blade folded into the fob housing to get the door open. Then I popped the fob apart on the hood. The CR2450 inside was the original battery - you could tell by how it was seated, no one had touched it. Voltage tested low. Swapped it with a fresh cell, reseated it clean, and tested the basic remote functions right there in the parking lot.
Still no start response. The fob needed to be resynchronized with the immobilizer after the battery had dropped that low. Connected through the OBD port, ran the resync procedure with my BMW-capable equipment, and tested every button plus confirmed the engine started normally.
She was on the road with about 90 minutes to spare. The whole thing from my arrival to her driving off was under 40 minutes. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a full key replacement job over the phone without even asking about her battery - which would have been a much longer wait and cost her considerably more than what she paid me.
She didn't need a new key. She needed someone who could diagnose on site instead of defaulting to the most expensive answer.
