Downtown Santee, mid-morning on a Tuesday. A guy called about his 2000 Cadillac DeVille sitting in his driveway going nowhere. He had bought it used a few months back and always had only the one key. That key snapped in the ignition cylinder. Not bent, not worn. Snapped clean, with part of it still seated in the lock.
He had already tried a magnet and a pair of tweezers before he called me. The broken piece was in deep enough that it was not coming out with household tools.
I extracted the broken section without pulling the cylinder, which is the part that saves everyone time. Once I had a clean cylinder, I decoded the cut from the wafer positions and cut a new blade to match. The blank I used was the correct transponder style for this generation of DeVille, chip included.
From there I connected my programmer to run the immobilizer enrollment. With no working key to start from, you have to go the all-keys-lost route, which clears the system and registers the new key fresh. The DeVille started on the first turn.
He asked about getting a second key made on the spot. I cut and programmed a spare right there so he would not be back in this position. He mentioned the dealer was already on his mind as the backup plan, which would have meant a tow since the car could not move. Two keys, done in the driveway, no tow required, for a fraction of what that route would have cost him.
