The blade is the more likely failure point over time, especially if the key lives on a heavy ring that puts stress on the ignition cylinder. Worn blades can start and then one day not. If the blade is visibly worn, cut a copy before it gets to that point.

The shell and key head can crack with years of use, but the chip can be transferred to a new case if it comes to that.

This is the real risk with buying a key off the internet and finding someone cheap to cut it. If there's no warranty behind the work, you're on your own when something goes sideways. We test before we leave and we stand behind it after.

Can I add a second transponder key myself on a 2004 DeVille, or do I need a tool?

The 2004 DeVille has an onboard add-a-key relearn sequence that does not require a scan tool as long as you still have at least one working programmed key. The general process involves using the existing working key to enter the security system's learn mode, then presenting the new key to the ignition so the immobilizer can register it.

The catch: the sequence is time-sensitive and has to be done correctly. If it gets interrupted or the steps are out of order, you can end up in the fault state I described above, where the car rejects everything. Also, if you've lost all keys, the onboard sequence won't help you. All-keys-lost on this vehicle requires a tool to access the security data and register from scratch.

The security light stays on solid or keeps flashing on my 2004 DeVille. Is that an immobilizer problem?

It depends on what the light is doing.

Flashing while the car is off is normal. That's the vehicle security system telling you it's armed. Not a fault.

Flashing while you're trying to start, or staying on solid after a start attempt that fails, is the immobilizer saying it didn't recognize the key. That can mean the wrong key, a damaged chip, a weak signal from the antenna ring, or a fault stored in the system from a prior event.

Solid on while the car is running is a different conversation and usually points to a stored fault code worth reading.

If the car cranks but won't fire, or starts and immediately stalls, that points directly to the security system not completing its handshake with the key. That's what we handle on site.
