The call came in from Eucalyptus Hills, out in Lakeside. She had driven her 2021 XT6 to the parking structure at her building, dropped the fob on the concrete floor, and watched it split open. The shell cracked across the seam, and when she tried to use the emergency blade to get in manually, it snapped off partway into the door lock cylinder. One fob. No spare. Blade stuck in the lock.
When I got there, the first thing was the blade fragment. Got that out without damaging the cylinder, then decoded the lock to cut fresh metal.
The fob itself was the interesting part. The shell was done, but the circuit board and transponder chip inside were intact. I pulled the electronics out of the cracked housing carefully, verified the board was undamaged, and transferred everything into a new matching shell. That meant the vehicle security system already recognized this fob. No full all-keys-lost reset, no long wait cycles, no guessing at whether the module would accept a freshly paired key. The original electronics went right back to work in a housing that was not held together by hope.
I cut two blades, verified both keys started the car, walked every button, and confirmed the door handles were reading correctly before I packed up.
She asked what the dealer had quoted her. She had called them first. I told her to think about what she had just paid me instead, and that was the end of that conversation.
If your fob took a hard hit and the shell is cracked, do not throw it away. The chip inside is usually the last thing to fail.
