I got a call from out in San Pasqual Valley on a Saturday evening. A guy had driven out to the area for a winery visit and when he came back to his 2025 XT6, the fob did nothing. No lock, no unlock, no response from the door handles. Just a key-not-detected warning on the dash when he finally got in using the mechanical blade hidden in the fob.
He could sit in the car. He just could not start it.
He had found me online and called instead of the dealer, which was already closed. I asked him a few things: had he replaced the battery recently, was the warning constant or intermittent, and did he have a second fob. No to all three.

When I got there I checked the fob first. CR2032 was at the end of its life. Swapped it, seated it properly, and the fob woke right up. The car paired to it immediately and started without any programming work at all.
He was relieved and a little embarrassed that it was just the battery. I told him not to be. The fob gave no real warning before it quit, and he did exactly the right thing by not guessing at fixes in a parking lot in the dark.
He left with a spare CR2032 in the glovebox and my number saved in his phone. That is a better outcome than a tow and a Monday dealer visit.
