1998 Dodge Neon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 1998 Neon to the dealer if I have no keys?

No. A mobile locksmith handles this on the spot. The dealer does not have any programming advantage on a 1998 Neon because the key is purely mechanical. Their process is the same as mine: identify the key cut and produce a key to match. The difference is they want the car in their bay, which means a tow bill before you even start talking about the key.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost replacement take on a 1998 Neon?

Typically under thirty minutes, and often faster. There is no timed countdown, no module relearn sequence, and no back-and-forth with a remote server. Once I decode the lock or pull the key code, the cut takes a few minutes on the machine. The rest of the time is testing the key in the ignition and door lock to confirm everything works cleanly.

Q: My 1998 Neon key turns hard and feels rough in the ignition. Should I just get a new key cut?

Maybe, but worn ignition cylinders on Neons this age are a known issue. If your existing key looks chewed up or thin from years of use, a freshly cut key to the correct depth and spacing can absolutely feel smoother. However, if the cylinder itself is worn or sticky independent of the key, a new cut will not fix that. Worth having someone look at both at the same time.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key from the door lock, or does it have to be the ignition?

Either one works. On a 1998 Neon the door lock and the ignition cylinder are keyed the same, so decoding either one produces the correct cut. Door locks are often easier to access when a car is locked up with no key present at all. If the door lock is damaged or has been replaced at some point and no longer matches the ignition, I decode the ignition cylinder instead.

1998 Dodge Neon Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near a barbershop off Bonita Road when a guy walked over and asked if I did old Dodges. His 1998 Neon had been sitting in the lot since the night before. He had locked his only key inside, realized it too late, and spent the morning figuring out his next move.

He had called the dealer first. They told him they could not help him at the shop and suggested a tow. He was not interested in a tow for a car that ran perfectly fine.

I got in through the door, cut a replacement key right there on the blade cutter in my van, and handed it to him in under twenty minutes. He tried it in the ignition, tried the door lock, and stood there for a second like he was waiting for something else to happen. Nothing else needed to happen. That was the whole job.

He mentioned the dealer quote for the tow alone. I just nodded. The key cost was a fraction of what he was looking at, and the car never moved from that spot.

Dodge Neon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 1998 Dodge Neon. Can you still make one?▼

Yes, and it is one of the cleaner all-keys-lost situations out there. The 1998 Neon uses a mechanical key with no electronic enrollment involved. To make a key with nothing in hand, I either pull the key code from the lock cylinder directly or decode the door lock on site. From there the key gets cut to match. No PIN extraction, no module communication, no waiting on software.
