It was a weekday afternoon in Downtown National City and she called me from a hospital parking lot. Groceries in the back seat, July heat, and her 2018 F-350 fob had just gone completely dead. She pressed the button standing ten feet from the truck and nothing moved. She said she could see a bag with frozen food through the window and she was watching the clock on it.
She had already called the dealer. Next available appointment was the following afternoon. That was not going to work for the ice cream.
I was there in under twenty minutes. First thing I did was try the fob on the door handle passive entry and on the push-button start. Nothing on either. I popped the key fob open on the hood and pulled the CR2450. It was reading almost zero volts. That part was simple. But when I seated a fresh cell and retested, range was still short and the truck was only catching the signal within about a foot of the door handle. That pointed to something beyond just a dead battery.
The internal antenna board inside the fob casing had visible corrosion on the contact points, probably from a slow leak on a previous cell that had gone unnoticed. At that point the fob itself needed to go.
I had a replacement fob on the van. Programmed it through the OBD port, added it to the truck's security system alongside her remaining key so she kept two working fobs, tested all five buttons, walked both door handles for passive entry, and confirmed the start button was reading the new key properly before I packed up.
From her phone call to her driving out of that lot was under an hour. The dealer would have had her back the next day and charged considerably more. The groceries made it home fine.
