A guy in Downtown Lemon Grove called on a Tuesday afternoon. He had two fobs for his 2019 F-350 and one had just stopped being recognized. Truck wouldn't start, push-button doing nothing, and he was already late getting back to a job site. He'd replaced the battery himself the week before and figured that fixed it. It didn't.
When I got there he handed me the fob and I could see right away the battery swap had gone sideways. The CR2450 he'd put in was seated fine, but whoever had opened it before him had slightly bent the positive contact away from the cell. Not enough to look obviously wrong, but enough that the connection was intermittent under vibration. Driving the truck had slowly worked it loose again.
I reseated the contact, dropped in a fresh CR2450 from my stock, confirmed the fob was reading cleanly against the backup reader, and then connected my diagnostic tool to verify both fobs were still properly enrolled. They were. No reprogramming needed, which is the best outcome because it means no wait time and no additional work.
He was back in the truck in about twenty minutes. He mentioned the dealer told him over the phone it would be a two-day turnaround just to get looked at. That's the part that always gets me. A bent battery contact at a dealer is still a two-day appointment.
